While You Were Sleeping

“I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.” –Psalm 3:5

Science

While we slept, the at least 100 billion galaxies continued to exist, your heart continued pumping out thousands of gallons of blood, and the earth continued spinning at least 1,000 miles per hour.

All we did was wake up this morning. But not even that is an act of our own volition. There is a complex system of several hormones that work involuntarily to awaken us from our sleep.

Safety

Need I mention our threat of danger? In several cities across the United States and the world, people do not have the luxury of sleeping in peace. Many of us do, but we easily take for granted how much different things could be for us.

God-Centered Hope

We could arrogantly look at all these realities and give a man-centered reasoning for each, but we know we cannot be the center of life. We are finite. We need rest, food, oxygen, and water. We cannot acquire theses things alone. We need someone or something to resource these things for us.

God is the sustainer of our lives. He is the sustainer of everything. And the sustainer of everything values our souls so much that he sacrificed his son so we could have an abundant life – a life in him (John 10:10). Apart from Jesus we can do nothing (John 15:5).

God alone is good. He is truly a good gift-giver. If he is orchestrating all things while we sleep – including our salvation – and continues to wake us up with the gift of life, how much more can we entrust him with our decisions, desires, and the whole of our lives? Our trust in God is our worth, because our worth is in his all-sustaining glory (Psalm 3:3).
