Watching Your Mouth and Actions

Posted by

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips! Do not let my heart incline to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds… –Psalm 141:3–4

Our husbands, wives, kids, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters – can be the people we sting most with our words. Our hearts are inclined to do evil to them as well as our neighbors. By nature we are selfish, and we do not wake up with the needs of other’s on our minds.

But believing we can stop the stinging of our words by our own power will only prove faulty over time. Believing we can think or act our way into putting others first with our time will likewise prove to be fraudulent.

We need the Lord to “set a guard” over our mouths. We need him to “keep watch over the door” of our lips. And he has done this when he gave us the Holy Spirit.

As we busy ourselves delighting and depending on righteousness, our desires for other people will be transformed. We will stop trying to misuse them and instead seek their good.

Let us seek the Holy Spirit’s help to be mindful of the words we are speaking and what we are spending our idle time on. As we reflect on God’s goodness to us, May our actions and words bring truth and life to those closest to us today, as we depend on God to not to let our hearts “incline to any evil” nor to busy ourselves with wicked deeds.
