Before You Complain Today

Posted by

You will be tempted to complain today. Your kids will misbehave. Your spouse will not meet your expectations. Someone will be in your way, driving very slowly, as you are making your way to your next meeting. Your barista might mess up your drink. Someone and some things are going to inconvenience you.

How will you respond? If you are not remembering the gospel, inevitably you will complain. You will throw a fit because you do not believe God has, is, and will forever give you every spiritual blessing and everything you need (Matthew 6:33; Ephesians 1:3).

What you cannot control you complain about. This is a failure to God. We forget that he is orchestrating all events for his glory and our greatest good (Romans 8:28). We forget what sovereign means–that God holds and exercises unlimited supreme authority over all of Creation. He has set into motion all things he has brought into being (Acts 17:28). There are no circumstances too big or little that cannot be entrusted to God.

Before we become content to complain, we should pause and ask ourselves, “Where am I failing to trust in God? What about this situation or person do I believe is outside the realm of God’s control?”

Then we can pray with thankfulness, “Father, forgive me for not trusting in you. I thank you that you hold all things together. If my rebellion and hatred of you could be overcome by your great love for me in Jesus Christ, then I can trust you to use this situation to bring your name glory and honor, and I can be filled with hope, joy and compassion toward others.” (2 Corinthians 4:15)
